2025 is finally here and off to a busy start, but before you get too swept up with resolutions, to-do lists, and other responsibilities, it never hurts to spare a thought for your child’s dental health. Continue reading to learn about a few key things to keep in mind that are certain to set your child’s smile up for a healthy and vibrant new year!
1. Start Early in Childhood
The journey to a healthy smile begins as soon as the first tooth arrives – or even sooner! After feeding sessions, you should clean your baby’s gums with a soft cloth or toothbrush designed for infants. Once the first tooth has arrived, you can introduce a small amount of toothpaste. Of course, you’ll have to do the brushing for your child during these early years, but you’re at least getting them accustomed to oral hygiene and beginning to instill lifelong habits. Their first dental checkup should coincide with this; be sure they’ve seen their provider no later than their first birthday.
2. Consistency Is Key
This is true for many things in life, but consistency is key – and practice makes perfect. Help your child to solidify their daily oral hygiene habits; just like you, they need to be brushing at least twice a day and flossing. Follow a morning and evening routine to instill the importance of regular dental care; it should be like clockwork. The more your child brushes daily (and sees you brushing), the more likely they’ll remember to stay on top of their habits as they grow older.
3. Make Dental Care Fun!
Turning dental care into a fun and engaging activity can foster positive future habits. Consider letting your child choose their toothbrush, toothpaste, and other oral hygiene products – kid-friendly versions might pique his or her interest! Positive reinforcement can also help your child establish a pattern; a reward chart that tracks their daily and weekly oral hygiene can go a very long way toward keeping them motivated and on top of their game.
4. Monitor Orthodontic Development
Although every child’s smile is unique, in most cases, there’s room for improvement with the help of orthodontics. At age 3, they should have most of their primary teeth, but around age 6 or 7, it’s wise to schedule an orthodontic consultation; while not all children will require early orthodontic intervention, an initial assessment can identify potential issues and prevent complex issues from occurring down the road. Remember, orthodontic issues include more than just crooked teeth, so don’t wait too long to bring your child in for an appointment so that their provider can get a head start on things.
