It’s common for braces to be considered a rite of passage for many teenagers. Metal brackets and wires tend to be the go-to solution, allowing patients to customize their treatment with colorful elastics and rubber bands. However, while some may be more focused on how to make their braces look “cool,” others may want to know about the daily dos and don’ts that come with these appliances. Read on to discover the answers to four of the most frequently asked questions about braces for teens.
Question #1: Is a Mouthguard Necessary with Braces?
Yes. If your teenager plays sports or is physically active, wearing a customized mouthguard will protect their braces from potential damage. A broken wire, loose bracket, or soft tissue laceration are all possible when engaging in contact or even non-contact sports. This is why having a barrier of protection is essential.
When worn over teeth with braces, the device absorbs unnecessary pressure to prevent a trip to the emergency dentist’s office – helping your teen avoid additional treatment and allowing you to keep more money in your wallet.
Question #2: Is Chewing Gum Bad for Braces?
If you look in the purses, pockets, or backpacks of most teenagers, you’ll likely find a pack of chewing gum. Unfortunately, this common habit is a big no-no when wearing braces. Not only can it be hard to remove, but the sticky substance can pull off brackets and wires, potentially causing a delay in treatment.
While some brands offer sugarless options and are ADA-approved (American Dental Association), it’s best to keep gum away from your teen during this time.
Question #3: How Long Will Treatment Last?
There is no definite answer to this question because every patient is different, as is every case. While the average time spent wearing braces is between 1-2 years, it can last longer or shorter depending on a few factors:
- The severity of the original problem (i.e., overcrowding, bite misalignment, gaps, etc.)
- The type of orthodontics your teen chooses to wear
- How committed they are to taking proper care of their braces (to avoid delays)
No matter how long your teenager is expected to wear their braces, it’s important they understand that “all good things come to those who wait.”
Question #4: Can Kissing with Braces Be a Problem?
While you might remember seeing teenagers get stuck together while wearing braces in various movies and television shows, this myth is more commonly used by parents to keep their kids from kissing. The truth, though, is that the chances of two people getting stuck while wearing braces are incredibly slim. Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely? No.
Whether it’s metal brackets and wires your teenager wears or clear aligners, kissing is a safe activity that is unlikely to cause much trouble when spending time with their special someone.
If you or your teen have additional questions about braces, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s orthodontist. They’re eager to help as well as provide clarity when it comes to uncertain topics.
